Agalloch - The White EP
May 4th 2008 19:28
The White EP is the latest effort from Oregon's premiere neofolk/pagan metal band, Agalloch. In my opinion it is one of their best works to date, second only to The Mantle.
This EP is mostly instrumental, with one spoken word part on the song "Birch White".
Track one, The Isle of Summer, this track starts off with a sound clip that is probably from the movie 'The Wicker Man', however, I can't be sure about that. Following this clip, it goes straight into an acoustic guitar part, that, like most Agalloch acoustic parts, is just amazing. There are several electric guitar parts throughout this song, however, none that would amount to this being considered a metal or rock song by any means, but that does not take away from the beauty of this song one bit.
Track two, Birch Black, another amazing track, this one is a bit faster, and does include some distorted guitar work, layered perfectly over the acoustic guitar part. This song shows how repetition is not always a bad thing.
Track three, Hollow Stone, an ambient track that is very fitting of its name, as it sounds very hollow, desolate even.
Track four, Pantheist, this song is a highlight of the record for me. It starts of with an atmospheric sample of running water and some birds, you can hear a horn being blown off in the distance then some drum sounds come in, following this, the acoustic guitar kicks in, this song is yet another example of how repetition can be a good thing. near the end of the track, Haughm adds a vocalized melody to the mix, creating a superb song.
Track five, Birch White, the only song on the record with any lyrics. These lyrics, however, are not sang, instead they are spoken. The song starts off with another acoustic riff, a bit faster than the others, and what sounds to be an accordion in the back ground. the lyrics are then recited over this. At the end of this song, there is a beautiful finger picked acoustic part that then fades out to a sound clip of some birds chirping, which leads perfectly into the next song. This is another one of the best songs from this record.
Track six, Sowilo Rune, a familiar Agalloch song, this one features a piano played over the strummed acoustic guitars. There is something being whispered throughout, but I can't make out what it is. There's not much else to be said about this track other than it is one of the more beautiful tracks on this record, closing with another sound clip from The Wickerman
Track seven, Summerisle Reprise, this is the final track of this EP. This one focuses more on the piano, playing a slow, melancholy, yet beautiful progression. It closes with another clip form The Wickerman.
I would suggest this release to anyone.
